In Februari 2024, I planned a trip to South Africa, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe. While traveling in South Africa, I came into contact with Bonnie from Gosling Coffee (https://www.goslingcoffee.com). 

I was eager to undertake fieldwork during my trip, and Bonnie required someone with expertise in Uganda to assist her and the Coffee Cooperative in the Rwenzori Mountains with implementing the EUDR legislation. We coordinated the specifics, and I departed from Johannesburg for Kampala. 

Arriving in Uganda felt like stepping into a completely different world: vibrant greenery; lush forests and countless shades of green. As I journeyed through the landscape, I marveled at the green beauty around me.  It was later that I discovered that much of this lush scenery was not natural but primarily composed of cultivated banana trees....

For two weeks, I worked closely with the Busongora Coffee Cooperative and visited approximately fifteen local farmers. During this time, I immersed myself deeply in the coffee production process and engaged with the community. While I don’t claim to have entirely integrated or become a part of the community—considering my Western European roots - the warmth and generosity I received were remarkable. The genuine hospitality and the joy shared with me were profound,  and I cherish every moment of this opportunity. 

For this work, I chose to embrace color. I hope the reason behind this choice resonates with you. The photographs aim to convey the vibrant colors, diverse personalities, and deep emotional connections of the place. I am certain that I will return to this beautiful area, but.... as my Ugandan friend says, “God is the one guiding us in whatever plans we undertake.”
