The Tourist Image of South Africa
South Africa is often shown in blogs and by travel agencies as a beautiful paradise, full of stunning landscapes, wildlife, and famous attractions. That image draws a lot of tourists, but it doesn’t tell the full story. Wealthy neighborhoods sit right next to large townships where people struggle to access basics like clean water, decent housing, and healthcare. The huge gap between rich and poor is a part of daily life for many South Africans and has deep roots in the country’s history of apartheid and economic exclusion.
The Power of Female Entrepreneurship
Despite these inequalities, a powerful movement of female entrepreneurs of color is rising in South Africa. These women are leading successful businesses and offering the country a fresh perspective. In this gallery, I want to highlight two remarkable female entrepreneurs I met in Johannesburg—a city that truly captured my heart. I interviewed Pearl and Molebogend, and learned about their life journeys, challenges & successes. Hopefully this collection emphasizes the positive aspects of South Africa and the essential uplifting narratives that exist alongside the country’s challenges.
Johannesburg is a city where I would love to live, if it weren't so terribly unsafe. Of course, this is a strange thought because you can't really separate these things in South-Africa, but that's how it feels to me. I love the vibrant, alternative, creative, and raw vibe that thrives there. No tourists on the streets—wonderful - except me, moving very, very quickly, because everyone in the shops warns me, "Get out of here, you shouldn't be walking around."
The people are so loving and kind to me, a Dutch person, despite our shared history that is still remembered every day. Such wonderfully kind people—I still can't believe how many I met. It makes me confront my own unpleasant behavior over the past weeks, months and years, and I think: I would go crazy from all the self-reflection & self-flagellation here, while simultaneously falling in love with the forgiveness and pure hearts of the people in this city.... Melville: one of the trendy neighbourhoods of Johannesburg. This vibrant area is known for its lively atmosphere, diversity, and artistic flair. I decided to spend my time in an airbnb in this area, at Pearl's home and that was not a bad decision at all. Pearl offers her guests not only a comfortable place to stay but also an authentic experience into her warm, open and colorful world.
Pearl is Pearl is a proud Zulu woman. Her upbringing in Zimbabwe was unique and incredibly enriching. She grew up in a 'safe house' for freedom fighters, an environment steeped in political activism and the pursuit of justice. The house served as a refuge for many prominent figures, and it was not uncommon for icons such as Bob Marley to visit.
Growing up in this environment gave her the opportunity to interact with people from diverse backgrounds, religions, and cultures. These connections and the stories she heard enriched her youth and played a crucial role in her personal development. She learned early on the importance of solidarity, diversity, and the strength of communities.
In addition to running her Airbnb, Pearl works as a music director, a role in which she can express her passion for music and creativity. It is an essential part of her life. Music serves as a healing source, a tool for connection, and a refuge for her.
Johannesburg is alive & full of inspiring individuals who embody vision, resilience, and warmth. Throughout South Africa, there is a remarkable spirit of hope and forward-thinking, particularly among the women I've met. One such inspiring person is Molebogeng, whose story reflects the vibrant energy and determination of the people here. I invite you to learn more about her journey and the positive impact she is making in her community.
Molebogeng is a young woman and the founder of WENOSA (Women's Empowerment Network of South Africa) since 2020. WENOSA is a platform dedicated to achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 5: gender equality and empowerment for all women and girls, with the ambition of creating a just future for everyone. The organization focuses on issues affecting women in South Africa, such as lack of economic opportunities, imbalance in unpaid care work, social norms and cultural practices (like child marriage), and access to education, healthcare, and menstrual products.
Molebogeng grew up in a middle-class family with a progressive mother. As the first Black cheerleader at her mostly white high school, she faced challenges breaking stereotypes. Her journey continued at university, where she studied business communication and media.
Her first romantic relationship started well but soon became imbalanced and abusive. She now sees that the relationship was unequal from the start, reflecting differing views on gender roles. Her growing awareness and empathy inspired her to found WENOSA.
